NEW FAMILY OF VOLKSWAGEN DELIVERY LIGHT TRUCKS COMES TO THE MARKET WITH A TOTALLY NEW CABIN DEVELOPED WITH EDAG DO BRASIL.

After 6 years of the beginning of our Product Development teams activities in Germany and Brazil we started seeing on Brazilian streets and highways the fruit of our work, the new cabin of the new VW Delivery truck family.

This is the largest project executed in Latin America by EDAG do Brasil, which was attended by more than 200 employees from various areas of Product Development, located in Brazil and Germany, and more than 500,000 hours of engineering.

The main objective of the project was a complete renewal of the Volkswagen Delivery lineup  and the expansion of VW Trucks' participation into the light truck segment (starting at 3.5t), with the adoption of a brand new cabin designed to meet the most varied applications, with safety and quality standards of the most demanding international markets

Since the design concept stage of the new project we felt challenged to work with attributes never before applied in the commercial vehicle segment; encompassing design, comfort, ergonomics, assembly and finishing requirements sometimes higher than the ones applied on passenger vehicles, but without leaving aside the robustness required by the segment.

According to Alexandre Sberveglieri; EDAG´s do Brasil Product Development Director; the exceptional outcome achieved by this new cabin is the result of the dedication, discipline and continued participation of the Volkswagen and EDAG project teams, who have worked in an integrated way since the beginning of the activities.

New technologies were applied to search the best solutions. State-of-the-art engineering tools have become mandatory to perform the studies and obtain the best results. Synchronous activities between Product and Process development teams, extensive dimensional simulations, and virtual analysis have brought the confidence needed for project maturity. Precise control of all documentation and data transfer through the integration of KVS (VW) and PDtec (EDAG) systems with the strict German Project Management rules and procedures ensure maximum control, secrecy and result along the entire development. All this integrated with a rigorous Information Security Management System (ISO 27.001 VDA) that respects the worldwide standards demanded by the VW group.

Now, after its launch, we can evaluate the result obtained, a truck with refined appearance, following the global requirements of the Volkswagen brand. A large, functional and easily accessible cab, the largest in the segment, was the result of various seating buck validations inside EDAG do Brasil facilities; the use of high strength hot stamping steels (UHSS) coupled with several finite element simulation cycles, where geometries, thicknesses and materials were optimized, resulted in a cabin 10% lighter than the previous one and, beyond that, achieving the international ECE R29 crash test requirements. A very practical and ergonomic interior, incorporating in its instrument panel all technological and safety features available in the market, including a steering column with height and depth adjustment, air bags (3.5t) for driver and passenger, navigation, fleet´s monitoring and communication, air conditioning, everything analyzed in details and executed by our engineers and specialists, from the concept and design phases in Wolfsburg - Germany up to the final Engineering release, in Resende - RJ.

We are very proud to participate in this great project and contribute to the success of Volkswagen Trucks in Brazil and its strategy of expansion and globalization, says Martin Vollmer, CEO of EDAG do Brasil.
